5/8/2017 0 Comments So What Blog Post Over the past week I have been reading Prisoner B-3087 by Alan Grantz. But I've been wondering, So What? How is the book important? Also, what is the main takeaway of the book? Well, that all will all be answered and more will be answered in this blog post.
As you may know my book takes place in Poland during the Holocaust. It tells the true story of Yanek who gets taken away by the Nazis because of his Jewish heritage to concentration camps. As he is on his travels through the camps he meets new characters who help or hurt him along the way. The novel ends with him being saved by the American soldiers who stumbled along the camp. He is excited but saddened knowing that he is now alone in a some what normal world. I feel that my book's main takeaway was that, No matter what life throughs your way keep your head up and don't stop fighting. I came to this idea because of this quote... "I picked my self up, I wasn't a Muselman. Might be starving, and I might be that nameless boy the others saw staggering through the ranks, but I wasn't dead yet. My Name was still Yanek, and I was going to survive". This describes how he needed to survive even when he was at his worst, that is the main takeaway. And finally I do feel that my book does still have meaning and value today. This is because it still teaches and tells the true story of a boy that stood up to the Holocaust and never gave in. It also could give a reader who didn't know much about the Holocaust and give them a shocking wake up call on bad it really was for the Jewish people.

5/4/2017 1 Comment Current Day connections blog Today in this blog post I shall explain to you how the Holocaust relates to current events. Currently in my book the main character Yanek has just been from the Nazi concentration camps and is looking for something todo with his life. As you may know the Holocaust was one of the most horrific genocides of all time, Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party attempted to destroy the entire population of Jewish people. This ultimately lead to a whole new country and new wartime crime punishments.
After the so called "Great War" the Jewish population was decimated, over six million people of Jewish decent were murdered during the Holocaust. Even though the survivors were rescued by the Allies they had no true home. Many organizations sprung up around the world such as the Jewish Federations that helped Holocaust survivors was ultimately not enough. This lead to the creation of a whole new country, Israel. Israel is now the home for all Jewish people and was supposed to avoid arguments with other opposing religions. But sadly this did not occur, instead many Palestinians are furious due to the fact that Israel stripped them of land and Holy sites in all causing even more conflicts. Due to the fact of how badly the people of the Holocaust were treated, the end of World War Two introduced a new ideal, War Crimes. These first War Crimes were held in Nuremberg, Germany. The trail tried the Nazis of genocide and going beyond the means to win a war. This is important to current day because many of these laws and regulations are still in use today to decide if a group or person is guilty of going too far in war times. In conclusion the Holocaust had a major effect on our current world today, from the creation of Israel to the usage of War Crime Trials. I hoped you have enjoy this post and stay tuned for more. 4/24/2017 1 Comment Historical connections Blog Post My book takes place in poland during the BEGINNING of world war two and the HOLOCAUST. in poland during the time of the book the german army has taken control of the main CHARACTEr's city of krakow. this easily compares my book to the actual takeover of Krakow, this is stated by Eyewitnesstohistory.com who said,"by october 6, 1939 it was ALL over, Poland had seized being a country". This shows that the event of the poland takeover is paired perfectly with the events in my book.
3/30/2017 0 Comments NEUSE river cleanup projectThe Gist Currently the Neuse River, located in across the state of NC is not in good condition. According to the City of Raleigh website, the main cause of pollution in the rivers and streams is runoff from commercial and residential buildings. Motor oil from auto repair shops and soaps from car washes run into the storm drains that will eventually become drinking water for many counties in North Carolina. This waste can also cause unsafe living conditions for fish and other river animals, when it goes into the environment. Other than runoff, littering is another large component to the pollution. One year, 12,000 pounds of trash was pulled out of the Neuse River (2010). To keep better care for our local rivers and streams, there should be more pickups in the rivers, especially the Neuse, which drains all over the state. If we do not do something soon the Neuse and all other bodies of water could become a personal landfill for NC residents. What is the Problem? The main problem with this issue is that it is caused by the community. When they choose to use the river as a dumping place, or they don’t pay attention to the runoff they may be causing. When they dump waste in the river, the effect is pollution and an unsafe environment for the wildlife. We need to warn the community and stop the dumping of waste in the river. It affects all of us downstream, as well. Why Do We Care? As students, how does this affect us? For one, the Neuse River and other bodies of water in Raleigh are very large, and drain into many other streams all over NC. The Swift Creek watershed effects eight towns alone and is drinking water for 500,000 people. Since this pollution effects such a large area, it can upset the ecosystem of these large areas. When this happens, whole populations could die out or habitats destroyed by the pollution. Everyone should be concerned with this. Another reason we want to help, is to keep our community clean and welcoming. You don't want to go out in the woods to see trash and polluted water when you could see prevalent wildlife and a natural environment. What Others Are Doing People in our community are not taking care of our streams and rivers. The Neuse River has had trash constantly thrown into its beautiful body of water. This has been going on for a long time, and we want to help. We are interested in this topic because this is an amazing body of water, and we don't want to see it go to waste. Currently, many small companies are trying to prevent the problem, the best they can. The best known ones are River Guardian Foundation, which helps organize river pickups for volunteers and the Carolina Canoe Club, which also has groups of volunteers at the Neuse, picking up trash and cleaning the rivers. The Plan (Link to Action Plan) Our goal is to to gather up to 50 pounds of waste in the Neuse River by gathering Martin 8th grade students to help, as well as raising awareness to Raleigh citizens and people in North Carolina. We hope by doing this we can make the Neuse a better place. We will have to advertize to volunteers and donations for the supplies for the cleanup. Conclusion Hopefully, by raising awareness and helping the streams, we will have far less pollution in the waters of North Carolina, and have a cleaner environment. What we will do is ask permission from our principal, then we will plan where we are going and how to get there. Finally once we arrive at the Neuse we will begin to reach our goal by collecting 50 pounds of trash out of the river. Even doing a small part can help a lot when it comes to pollution.
